Rustenburg Show week is a big event on Rustenburg’s calendar, and since I have not been in ages, I dragged a friend with me; something interesting to do with our Monday afternoon. It was great having the showgrounds mostly to ourselves and I imagined the whole place filling up after school, kids standing in cues at the rides, the music, the junk food, lights and show ground smells…
We were aimlessly walking around on this sunny afternoon, not really paying attention to the stands, when we started noticing all the small local businesses who went through the trouble to display their products; trust me, I know the effort it takes. So, since RATA is all about tourism in Rustenburg, I decided to collect their information and tell you a bit about these fantastic entrepreneurs who can assist us with building our tourism economy.
The first stand we stop at belongs to Loraine Moreke from LOLO M Cr
eations who makes the most beautiful and fragrant soaps at her home. Her product actually looks like something that you can buy from a chain store.
Walking through one of the massive halls, we noticed that Luka seems to be a hub of creative small businesses; jewelery, beadwork, knitting, home made cleaning products, clothes, fresh produce, glass beads, weaving and furniture. Everything beautifully made locally and very professional. Next time you are looking for something special, really try to buy local.
We were very happy to see that our friend Gift from BaDivine Jewelers, with his stunning range of African inspired gold and silver pieces was there, friendly as ever, busy working on his next piece.
The business that probably impressed me the most though, was the Woman In One Purpose Project; permanently situated at the Rustenburg Show Grounds. With their industrial sewing machines, they can sew you a traditional outfit in one day! Your international guests can make a quick pit stop in the morning to get their measurements taken, and collect their outfits in the afternoon. That is something worth mentioning!
Of course RATA member Nare Tours was also there in all their glory.
